UK Accelerates Renewable Energy Deployment With Steady Growth in Wind And Solar Capacity

Latest data reveals that the UK is expected to add more than 1 GW of new wind power capacity in 2025. To meet its wind power development target of 45–47 GW by 2030, the countrystill needs to accelerate the progress of project construction. In the solar sector, cumulative installed photovoltaic capacity reached 19 GW by the end of June 2025, with an additional 621 MW added in the first half of the year.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) noted that the current statistics are preliminary and may be revised later. In June, the UK added 88 MW of new solar capacity, lower than the 160 MW added during the same period in 2024. Notably, developer Quinbrook commissioned the 373 MW Cliffe Hill Solar Park in July, making it the largest solar power project in the UK to date.

Recently approved large-scale solar projects include the 180 MW Byers Gill Solar Farm and the 400 MW East Yorkshire Solar Farm. These projects align with the UK's "Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects" criteria and are expected to significantly enhance the country's utility-scale solar power generation capacity.

To achieve its solar development target of 45–47 GW by 2030, the UK government is advancing multiple supporting policies. Measures outlined in the Solar Roadmap include the seventh round of the Contracts for Difference allocation scheme, higher energy efficiency standards for new homes, and reforms to planning and grid connection processes. Additionally, the government is exploring the relaxation of restrictions on balcony and rooftop solar installations, as well as the potential application of solar canopies in parking lots.
